Lorca, The Path of Voices

Lorca, The Path of Voices is a musical pilgrimage created by the Grenoble-based duo Azagio, bringing together Iranian-born guitarist Pirouz Djoharian and singer Isabel Puig, whose artistic journey has long been inspired by the life and work of Federico García Lorca.

Together, they set out across Spain on a journey that is both poetic and deeply civic. Their aim is to return Lorca's voice to the public sphere, allowing his words to resonate once again in streets, squares and shared spaces, as a living tribute to a poet who was murdered because of what he embodied: the freedom to create, the freedom to love, and the freedom to think.

Their route traces a landscape of memory. In Figueres, the project recalls the remarkable intellectual and artistic bond between Lorca and Salvador Dalí—one of the most fertile relationships of the Spanish avant-garde, shaped as much by artistic admiration as by profound personal affection. In Benicàssim, the pilgrimage connects with Isabel Puig's family roots, weaving together personal memory and collective history. In Valencia and Cartagena, two Mediterranean ports open to the wider world, it celebrates the exchanges, migrations and encounters through which cultures have always been formed. In Granada, Lorca's birthplace, the pilgrimage reaches its spiritual heart. Here, the poet's presence remains palpable despite the silence imposed by his assassination at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Finally, Tarragona recalls the story of the Carthusian monks who found refuge in Spain after the French Revolution—a reminder that throughout European history, persecution has forced countless women and men to seek safety beyond their own borders. This final stage broadens the project into a reflection on exile, remembrance and human solidarity. Along the way, the journey unfolds through spontaneous street performances and impromptu concerts, restoring poetry to its natural place in the life of the city.

Today, this project carries particular significance

At a time when hate speech and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people are once again gaining ground in many countries, Lorca remains a universal symbol of resistance. His homosexuality, long erased from public memory, is now recognized as an essential part of his story. Honouring Lorca also means defending the inseparable bond between artistic creation, the freedom to love and democratic values.

This pilgrimage therefore becomes an act of vigilance against homophobia, against every form of intolerance, and against the violence directed at artists, writers and free expression.

Pirouz Djoharian brings another powerful dimension to the project. As a musician from Iran, he carries with his guitar the memory of cultures that continue to resist censorship and attacks on fundamental freedoms. The encounter between a French singer of Spanish heritage and an Iranian musician transforms this journey into a crossing of borders, where Lorca's Spain meets the wider Mediterranean world.

The title, Lorca, The Path of Voices, reflects this ambition: to make the road itself a place of creation, where every concert becomes an act of remembrance, every street a stage, and every encounter a shared poem. This is not a travelling show in the conventional sense. It is an artistic pilgrimage—a walk of memory, hope and human connection.

Through Lorca's songs and poetry, the duo wishes to remind audiences that poetry remains a powerful form of resistance, that music can become a political language without ever losing its beauty, and that the voices of poets continue to echo across generations whenever people refuse to let them be forgotten.

Because to sing Lorca today is to defend a simple yet essential belief: a society that protects its poets, its artists and the freedoms of every individual is a society that remains truly alive.
